(From Chapter 8: Alphetraz’s Silver-Paired Stars)
Selene sat there, stunned. Moments went by before she scrambled for one of Kainan’s robes at the end of
the bed, wrapping it around herself. She heard the head turn on moments later and the splash of falling
water. She wracked her brain, trying to understand his sudden departure.
Her heartfelt confession at the end! Had that spooked him? But hadn’t he, too, been saying sweet nothings
all week?
Confused, she rose to her feet and traversed the space into the bathroom. The door slid open.
There he was, in all his physical magnificence, the shower jets cascading over the gigantic planes of his
body in a silken waterfall. One powerful arm was stretched out and leaning against the shower wall—the
other hung by his side.
This wasn’t the confident lover who’d just given her so much pleasure. Instead, the supple flow of his large
muscled body seemed somewhat slumped, in some form of defeat.
His body jerked at the sound of her entry, but he didn’t look up. His long hair fell like a dark curtain over the
side of his face, hiding his features.
She approached him and touched him gently. Only then did he push the hair from his eyes and look up to
meet her gaze.
‘You OK?’ she asked, running her fingers along his arm.
He nodded roughly, pulling away from her touch. She immediately froze.
He didn’t say anything for a long moment. At last, he turned over the head, and the shower stopped. Leaving
only the sound of water dripping to the floor.
Then he took a deep breath, then spoke very slowly and carefully. ‘The thing is, Selene, I don’t do forever.
It’s not what this is.’
A maglev train hit her right in the centre of her solar plexus.
She stared at him long enough that he looked away.
A fit of irrational anger rose from deep within her and poured out heatedly.
Moments later, she turned, missing the glance he shot her and the flash of momentary sadness that
followed.
Heart thumping, Selene took a step away, then another, until she found herself walking stiffly out of his
chamber and slowly moving towards her guest room.
Once inside, she locked the door and leaned against it. Then she sunk to the floor, her back against the
ancient wood.
How could she have been so stupid?
